Bone Density

Bone densitometry, also known as Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA), is used to measure bone mineral density (BMD). It helps assess the strength of bones and the risk of fractures, particularly in conditions like osteoporosis, which is characterized by weak and brittle bones.

Benefits of DEXA:

  • Early Detection of Osteoporosis: DEXA scans help identify osteoporosis before fractures occur, allowing for early intervention and treatment to prevent serious injuries.
  • Fracture Risk Assessment: By measuring bone density, DEXA scans provide a clear understanding of a patient’s risk of fractures, especially in postmenopausal women and older adults, who are at higher risk of bone loss.
  • Monitoring Bone Health: DEXA is used to monitor the effectiveness of osteoporosis treatments over time, ensuring that patients receive appropriate care to improve or maintain bone density.
  • Guiding Treatment Decisions: Results can guide physicians in deciding whether to start, continue, or adjust treatments aimed at strengthening bones and reducing fracture risk.
  • Safe and Quick: The scan is non-invasive and can be completed in a few minutes.
